Indian Coffee House, College Street
Kolkata, India · Historic Coffee House

The story
The Coffee Board opened this coffee house in the former Albert Hall in 1942; it became the Indian Coffee House in 1947 and has been worker-run since its rescue and reopening in 1958. The vast double-height hall and balcony became Kolkata’s legendary setting for adda among students, writers, filmmakers and political thinkers.
Why Indian Coffee House, College Street is iconic
Its beauty is civic rather than polished: monumental proportions, whirring fans and generations of conversation make the room one of India’s most culturally important café interiors.
