Hyotei

The story

Hyotei began more than four centuries ago as a guard post and rest stop beside Nanzen-ji Temple. Its main compound remains a sequence of independent thatched tea rooms set around a mossy garden, ponds and stone lanterns. Fifteen generations of the same family have transformed tea-house hospitality into one of Kyoto’s defining kaiseki experiences.

Why Hyotei is iconic

Hyotei proves that a trip-worthy restaurant interior need not be monumental. Tatami rooms, round windows, shadowed timber and garden views create a complete architectural ritual in which meal, season and place are inseparable.
